San Bernabe Vineyard : Geography

San Bernabe Vineyards

Soil: The San Bernabe Vineyard comprises a variety of soil types ranging mainly from loamy to sandy loam a specific clay-like well-draining soil.

Climate: The Monterey Canyon, an undersea feature the size of the Grand Canyon and located deep in Monterey Bay, makes its presence felt nearly every day in the form of wind, fog and chilling sea air. As a result Monterey's waters to be appreciably colder than coastal waters for many miles north or south of it.

Farther inland the cool marine influence dissipates so that the San Bernabe Vineyard is neither as cold as the cool climate of Salinas, nor as hot as Paso Robles in the interior. Temperatures vary up to five degrees from the north to south end of the vineyard.

Grape Varieties: The vineyard produces a dazzling array of grape varieties -- 21 different types! Among them are cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah/shiraz, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, barbera, gewürztraminer, white riesling, lagrein and valdiguié, to name just a few.
